Program Description

Event Details

Jamie Viebach, University of Illinois horticulture educator, will discuss this insect's history, lifecycle, and effects on plants and people.

Cicadas are harmless to humans and pets, and they have evolved alongside trees for millions of years, forming a crucial part of the ecosystem’s balance. Beginning this May, two periodical cicada broods will emerge in Illinois, with their noise and numbers making it a memorable spring.

This year's rare dual emergence hasn't happened since 1803 when Thomas Jefferson was President of the United States!

For those interested, there also will be a cicada recipe shared.

Tuesday, May 14, 7 p.m. This is a free virtual program using Zoom.
