The Utkalaa Center for Dance will be presenting new Odissi work choreographed by the founder, Srimati Ipsita Mahapatra and presented by Sunameeka Panigrahy. Odissi originated in the temples of the Eastern state of Orissa, and is inspired by the temple carvings of Konark and Kajura-ho. The two basic stances, Tribhangi, where the hip is deflected and the torso and head shifted to create a S- shape, and Chouka, a square stance, characterize the dance. The sinuous movements of the torso combined with precise footwork give Odissi a unique grace.
This program is partially supported by a grant from the Illinois Arts Council Agency through federal funds provided by the National Endowment for the Arts.
Open to the public, no registration is required.
